Why Brands Need UGC in 2026

In 2025, Aerie’s Instagram pledge put a familiar question back in focus: when do audiences respond to real people rather than heavily polished creative?

Aerie, the American clothing brand behind the #AerieREAL campaign, pledged not to use AI-generated people or bodies in its imagery. Business Insider reported that the pledge was Aerie’s most popular Instagram post of the preceding year, citing Metricool data.

The response may reflect an audience preference for transparency from this brand. It does not prove that human-created ads will outperform AI-assisted work in every campaign.

This is one reason to consider creator-led work alongside polished brand assets.

The Aerie Case: When Rejecting AI Became a Winning Move

Aerie extended its existing no-retouching position by pledging not to use AI-generated people or bodies in its imagery. The campaign emphasized real people and unretouched bodies.

Business Insider reported more than 40,000 likes and 500 comments on the pledge post as of October 2025. That response shows strong interest among Aerie’s followers, not a guaranteed outcome for other brands.

Are we losing the human touch that makes people feel something?

The Emotional Power of Real Faces and Voices

AI can help produce polished visuals, while a real creator can bring first-hand context and spontaneous details that are harder to script. That shaky camera angle, spontaneous laughter, and unscripted tone—all the cues our brains label as “real.”

The impact of creator-led ads depends on the audience, message, placement, and execution. Compare them with branded creative in the same campaign before drawing conclusions about engagement or trust.

Today’s consumers don’t just want to buy from brands; they want to believe in them. And belief doesn’t come from perfection; it comes from relatability.

AI Can’t Fake Trust — But UGC Can Earn It

AI can support planning and editing. For a testimonial or product demonstration, however, the brand still needs to decide when a real person’s first-hand delivery matters. You can train a model on tone, but not intent. In 2026, AI-generated ads will flood every platform, but the real differentiation won’t be speed or scale—it will be trust.

Trust is built when a real person—a customer, a creator, a user—shares their experience in their own voice. That first-hand perspective is difficult to substitute with generated creative alone.

Brands that understand this will start combining both worlds: AI for creative support, UGC for emotional authenticity. That combination is worth testing against other creative approaches.
