Korea App Rankings, Platform Updates, and Market Signals
Issue 07 · August 23–August 30, 2026
Two patterns stood out in Korea this week: Olive Young is turning K-beauty curation into a national U.S. retail distribution layer, while Kakao is pairing seller education with paid-commerce execution. App charts add a sharper local signal: public-service and banking apps rose alongside an unusually fresh game leaderboard.

Market developments
What Changed This Week
Olive Young turns K-beauty curation into a U.S. distribution layer
What happened: CJ Olive Young says its August 20 K-Beauty Edit launched in more than 580 Sephora locations nationwide, following its first U.S. Olive Young Festa in Los Angeles. The company is selecting brands based on their Korean track record and potential to resonate overseas, then using Sephora’s network to widen discovery. (9)
Why it matters in Korea: Korean consumers often use Olive Young as a discovery-and-validation layer; exporting that curation model gives smaller brands a more legible route into a fragmented U.S. market and shows how Korean retail know-how can travel with the assortment. (10)
Foreign-company takeaway: Foreign brands entering Korea should treat local retail or platform partners as localization infrastructure—not just shelf space. Curated assortments, creator-led demos, and an easy path from discovery to purchase can reduce trust friction.
Kakao pairs seller education with ad execution
What happened: On August 27, Kakao announced Kakao Shopping Deo-haneun-gachi, a program with Korea’s SME ministry and small-business agency. It selected 143 Talk Deal sellers for training; later, standout sellers can receive one-to-one consulting plus Big Card and Catalog ad practice budgets. (11)
Why it matters in Korea: In Korea, marketplace growth often depends on sellers learning platform-native merchandising and messaging, not simply opening a storefront. Kakao is making that operating model explicit through training and hands-on campaign support. (12)
Foreign-company takeaway: For SaaS and commerce teams, local growth programs are signals of a platform’s preferred operating model. Build Korean-language onboarding, catalog quality, and campaign measurement into the launch plan.

Kakao’s September seller cohort
Kakao is recruiting its second cohort through September 7. The practical signal for foreign companies is whether trained sellers produce repeat Talk Deal sales and more efficient ad spend—not just attendance. (15)
