Korea App Rankings, Platform Updates, and Market Signals

Issue #05 · August 9–16, 2026

South Korea’s free-app charts split into two clear stories this week. Short-form drama apps filled three of the iOS Top 6 positions, while newly visible games captured four of the six leading game slots across both stores. The useful takeaway is a discovery market where category momentum and coordinated launches can create visibility quickly—but chart position alone says nothing about retention.

This Week in Three Signals

01

Short dramas crowd the Top 6

DramaWave climbed to iOS No. 2, DramaBox reached No. 5, and Vigloo entered at No. 6, creating a three-app cluster near the top. (1)

02

New games align across stores

Frost Kingdom and Random Dice 2 took iOS Nos. 1 and 2 and also entered Google Play at Nos. 2 and 3. (2)

03

PDF utilities take Android’s lead

Three PDF apps occupied Google Play Nos. 1, 2, and 4. No verified explanation was found for the cluster. (3)

Ranking observation: Short-form drama apps held five Top 10 positions across the two free-app charts: DramaWave, DramaBox, and Vigloo on iOS; DramaBox and NetShort on Android. Sensor Tower separately described a Korean market led by DramaBox and DramaWave, with Vigloo gaining ground. The weekly chart shows visibility, not the cause or scale of demand. What Changed This Week

Short-form drama becomes a three-way iOS contest

What happened: DramaWave ranked No. 2 on Korea’s iOS free-app chart, followed by DramaBox at No. 5 and Vigloo at No. 6. The result placed three dedicated short-form drama services inside the Top 6 in the same weekly snapshot. (9)

Why it matters in Korea: Sensor Tower reported that Korea’s short-drama market reached record monthly revenue in January 2026, with DramaBox and DramaWave leading and the Korea-based Vigloo ranking third by monthly revenue. (10)

Foreign-company takeaway: Treat the format as a localized acquisition-and-retention system. Test Korean hooks, episode pacing, subtitles, paywall timing, and creative iteration together, then compare post-install quality across channels.

Two new games achieve cross-store visibility

What happened: Random Dice 2 launched on August 13 with a strategy-first proposition built around equal starting conditions and no shop or gacha system. By the August 16 snapshot, it ranked No. 2 among iOS free games. (11)

Why it matters in Korea: Random Dice 2 also entered Google Play at No. 3, while Frost Kingdom appeared at No. 1 on iOS and No. 2 on Google Play. The shared pattern is cross-store launch visibility, not yet sustained demand. (12)

Foreign-company takeaway: Coordinate Korean storefront assets, social proof, community onboarding, and live-operations timing across iOS and Android. Track retention and payer conversion separately; a shared chart spike is only an acquisition signal.

Will launch-week game visibility hold?

Watch whether Frost Kingdom and Random Dice 2 remain near both stores’ leaders after their first full week, and whether CookieRun: Crumble can keep its cross-platform Top 4 position. (15)
